Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts
The Attraction Overview
Escape from Gringotts drops riders into a bank-heist chase through the vaults beneath Diagon Alley, blending a full-scale indoor roller coaster with 3D screens, physical sets, and animatronics into one continuous story. Guests descend via a working elevator queue before boarding goblin-piloted bank carts for the ride itself.
What sets it apart is its use of switch-track technology, letting the ride vehicle's path branch through different physical scenes and screen sequences — a rarity among coasters worldwide and part of why fans consider the queue-to-finale experience one of the most immersive rides in Orlando.
The Story
The attraction opened on July 8, 2014, as the centerpiece of the newly built Diagon Alley expansion, which also connected Universal Studios Florida to Islands of Adventure via the Hogwarts Express. It replaced the Jaws attraction that previously occupied the site.
Before the Clock Strikes
- Ride first thing at rope drop or in the last hour before close — the standby line regularly exceeds an hour by midday.
- A single-rider line is available and can dramatically cut wait times, but it skips the elaborate bank-vault preshow and queue theming, so walk the standby queue at least once first.
- Expect a mix of drops, launches, and screen-based effects rather than pure airtime — riders prone to motion sickness from projection screens should be cautious.
- If you enjoyed Revenge of the Mummy's blend of practical sets and coaster thrills, this ride raises that formula considerably with denser theming and effects.
