Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge

The Attraction Overview

Riders wear AR headsets — developed jointly by Universal Creative and Nintendo — that project racing graphics directly into their field of view, simulating a first-person Mario Kart race alongside Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach. As a team of four aboard a fixed-rail kart, riders steer virtual moments, throw shells at Bowser's Koopaling henchmen, and try to collect 100 coins to beat Team Bowser and claim the Golden Cup.

Epic Universe's version is the third global installation of this ride system, after Universal Studios Japan (2021) and Universal Studios Hollywood (2023), and its queue and physical sets most closely mirror the original Japan version — more elaborate than Hollywood's trimmed-down layout, with its own dedicated queue separate from the neighboring Yoshi's Adventure ride.

The Story

Super Nintendo World was first announced for Japan in January 2017; Bowser's Challenge was unveiled in November 2020 and opened there in March 2021. Epic Universe's version is a clone of that ride system rather than a new design, opening May 22, 2025 with no predecessor attraction (it's a new park).

Its head-mounted AR display technology, co-developed with Nintendo, is frequently cited as a notable technology showcase for large-scale theme-park dark rides, though it first debuted in Japan in 2021, not at Epic Universe.

Before the Clock Strikes

You can remove the AR headset mid-ride if you feel overstimulated — the visuals overlay real physical surroundings, so reported motion sickness is low, but sensory overload (lights, sound, motion) is common.
Riding without the headset means you can't help your kart hit the 100-coin team objective — a trade-off worth knowing before boarding.
Watch for character cutouts near the boarding area — they help you recognize Team Bowser targets once inside.
Universal Express Pass is accepted.
