The Attraction Overview
Smugglers Run puts six people in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon and gives each of them a job. Two fly it, two shoot, and two run repairs, across a cockpit carrying more than two hundred buttons, switches and levers. What happens on screen genuinely responds to what the crew does, which means a good run and a badly flown one look different.
The ride itself is about four minutes. The queue is the other half of the attraction — it walks you underneath a full-size Millennium Falcon parked outside, which is the single most photographed object in the land.
The Story
Smugglers Run opened with Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disney's Hollywood Studios on 29 August 2019, three months after the Disneyland version opened on 31 May.
The land itself was announced in August 2015 and broke ground in April 2016. At fourteen acres it is the largest single-land expansion Disney has built, set in the village of Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu.
Before the Clock Strikes
- The pilot seats are the ones people want, and the roles are assigned as you board rather than chosen. If it matters to your group, say so to the cast member at the console — it is not guaranteed, but asking costs nothing.
- Engineer is the least interactive of the three jobs. It is the seat to give up if someone in your party would rather watch than press things.
- At 38 inches this is the more accessible of the two Galaxy's Edge rides, and the shorter one. It is usually the better first Star Wars ride for a younger child.
- Motion is mild by simulator standards, but it is a simulator. If screens on a moving platform are a problem for someone, this is one to skip rather than test.
