Skull Island: Reign of Kong

The Attraction Overview

Guests board a 72-passenger expedition truck for a King Kong-themed off-road journey deep into Skull Island, passing through jungle ruins and prehistoric beasts before a face-to-face encounter with Kong himself defending the truck from giant predators.

The ride vehicles use special steering and motion technology that lets each truck move somewhat independently through the show scenes rather than following a fixed rail path, giving every ride a slightly different feel.

The Story

Skull Island: Reign of Kong soft-opened June 9, 2016 and officially opened July 13, 2016, developed with consultation from King Kong (2005) director Peter Jackson and built by Universal Creative in partnership with Oceaneering.

Before the Clock Strikes

  • A single rider line and Express Pass access are both available, which helps on a ride with a long walk-through queue.
  • The pre-show and queue set the story — don't rush through it, since the payoff scenes reference details established early on.
  • Front-row seats get more spray and dust effects; if you want the biggest 'in the action' feeling, ask for the front.
  • Expect a bumpier, more physical ride than a typical dark ride — closer in intensity to a mild off-road simulator than to something like Forbidden Journey.
