They've Started Pouring Concrete on Dark Universe's Mystery Building

In June we wrote about a permit nobody had explained: B26903939, filed with Orange County, calling for a 71,500-square-foot structure in Darkmoor Village at Epic Universe. We said at the time that we would update it the moment there was anything new.

There is something new. They are pouring concrete.

What's happening on the ground

WDW News Today reported today that crews are delivering concrete for foundation pilings on the site between the Monsters Unchained show building and a backstage service road, working from aerial photography and video posted by bioreconstruct.

What the photos show:

  • Piling locations at regular spacing around parts of the site's perimeter
  • Concrete mixer trucks on site, with tall piling equipment and crews working
  • Mostly open dirt, tire tracks, orange safety fencing and cones
  • Holes and disturbed ground along the service road
  • Small wooden covers and A-frame markers at earlier piling positions
  • Excavators, a front loader, pickups, open containers

And one thing that is not there yet: any aboveground frame. This is still foundation work.

What is not confirmed, and we mean it

Universal has not announced the attraction's theme. Universal has not announced an opening date. Universal has not said anything.

Even the pilings are hedged in the reporting. Their specific purpose is not confirmed, only that they will potentially form part of a show building's foundations. The show building outline and the steel-frame read come from bioreconstruct's observations, not from Universal.

One more thing we are not going to do, because it would be easy and wrong: we are not stating that this concrete belongs to permit B26903939. Our June piece put that 71,500-square-foot filing in the centre of Darkmoor Village. Today's work is described as sitting between Monsters Unchained and a service road. That is very likely the same project. It is not confirmed to be, and the difference between "very likely" and "confirmed" is the whole reason anyone should trust a construction post.

Why this one is worth caring about

Dark Universe opened as the smallest of Epic Universe's four lands by ride count, built around a single anchor attraction in Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment. A second major structure in that land is a meaningful change to how the place works, whatever it turns out to be.

And foundation pilings are a real milestone. Permits are intentions. Site clearing is preparation. Concrete in the ground is money spent and a footprint that is no longer easy to change.

The theme is still anybody's guess, and we are going to leave it that way rather than hand you a rumour with our name on it. What we can tell you is that something large is now physically committed to that corner of the park, and that Universal's usual pattern is quiet paperwork first and the announcement much later.

We will keep updating this one too.
